Holidays by train

Forsaking the plane for the train is becoming an increasingly popular option among carbon-conscious holiday-makers.  Travelling return from London to Paris by Eurostar instead of flying, for example, is estimated to generate less than a tenth of the carbon dioxide - 11 kilos as opposed to 122.

But do the environmental benefits come at the cost of economy and convenience? Increasingly not, it appears. As Britons become more experienced and savvy about rail travel around Europe and beyond, so some attractive price deals are emerging and positive reports of enjoyable holidays emerge.

Substantial advance discounts are available on fares booked with operators such as German Rail company DB Bahn and Rail Europe a convenient one-stop-shop for many tickets with friendly staff.  For invaluable information on routes, rolling stock and fare options, visit the idiosyncratically brilliant Man in Seat 61

Our family’s experience over the last 3 years has been that rail travel costs around 25% more than flights. But while we’ve booked in advance at a discount, using Rail Europe, we’re aware that better bargains are appearing. Buying tickets on the ground and on the day can be cheaper for fairly short journeys where timing isn’t critical. And national operators, particular DB Bahn, have some amazing offers for those prepared to scour websites and do the detail with their telesales staff.

Even when rail comes a little pricier than planes, we still plan to go by train whenever possible as it’s simply turned out to be a much nicer experience. There’s less time spent on booking in, getting through security and waiting in departure lounges  Stations are often more interesting than airports. Train journeys enable you to spend a few hours between trains in a new city. You can see the country going by. There’s more legroom. Above all you’re liberated from the usual model of going direct from A to B and back again. You can vary the outward and return legs, spend nights en route or make the whole holiday a round trip.

You can read a longer account of our experiences here.  And why not have a look at a map of the European network here to get inspired for your next holiday!
